Make a Wall Clock using Toilet Paper Rolls

I had to wait quite looong to start this project. Waiting for my toilet paper rolls slowly running out, changed with the new roll again, running out again.... and again.. such a long time. I collected them till I get enough toilet paper rolls and start to think about what cool project I can do with it. Since I upgraded my wall clock in my room, I turned the IKEA wall clock into a stunning wall art and I still have the clock mechanism unused and waiting for my next project. So I decided to create a wall art and wall clock using the toilet paper and the clock mechanism. If you like to know how I did it, lets get start it....

Materials to Make a Wall Clock using Toilet Paper Rolls:

  • Clock mechanism
  • Toilet paper rolls (bunch of it)
  • Foam board. I got it from Art Friend shop for 3.00 RM
  • Cardboard
  • Glue. I use Elmer's Glue
  • Acrylic paints. Used Folkart Acrylic Paint White and Aqua Matter colors. I got it from Art Friend shop for 8.90 RM each tube.
  • Craftwork knife / cutter. I got it from Mr. DIY shop for 17.00 RM
  • Painting brush. I got it from Art Friend.
  • Board Marker
  • Ruler
  • Masking Tape
  • Tack It Multipurpose Adhesive

Directions to Make a Wall Clock using Toilet Paper Rolls:

Step 1: Prepare your toilet paper rolls. Use pencil or marker, put mark on the roll with some distance, such as 1.5 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, and so forth. Its all up to you. Since I have quite varieties of toilet paper rolls with some different diameters. I made some different circle with different size and height.

Step 2: Cut the toilet paper. I used craftwork knife to cut it but if you don't have cutter will be a good option for you. Cut all around it until you get a piece of smaller roll. Go ahead and cut the other rolls.

Step 3: Once your rolls cut, lay your foam board and place the roll on the top of it. Start to trace the roll on the foam board. Once you get the exact size, cut them using the craftwork knife or cutter. I cut it slightly larger, so then I still can trim it to get the exact size base on the roll size. Continue to trim it until it perfectly fit inside the roll. Since you use foam board, you don't have to worry so much, you could easily push your foam board inside the roll once you get nearly same size with the roll.

Step 4: Glue inside of the roll, spread the glue well all around it and place your foam. Wait till it completely dry. Continue to do the same with the rest of the foams and the rolls.

Step 5: Once all the rolls covered with foam, start to paint them. I used FolkArt Acrylic Paint white and aqua matte colors for this projects. Start with white color paint as a base for all the rolls. Wait till it completely dry. Then paint them with white and aqua colors. So I have some rolls with white and more rolls with aqua colors. Let it dry well. Then do the second and third coat to get strong finished color.

Step 6: Put your painted rolls aside, start to make the cover for the clock mechanism Create a circle on a cardboard and foamboard, should be bigger than the size of the clock mechanism. Cut inside of the foamboard in the size of the clock motor so then you can attach the clock motor on it. Cut it using the craftwork knife or cutter.

Step 7: Create a small hole in the center of the cardboard so then the center of the clock mechanism can appears outside. and you can put the needle on it. Start to assemble them. Glue the cardboard and the foam boards. Place the foam boards on the back side of the cardboard. Wait till it completely dry. Then start to paint it to white color.

Step 8: Once all parts of your wall clock ready, use adhesive stick on the back of it to stick it to the wall. Firstly, don't forget to create the sketch on how you want to decorate it and snap it so then it guides you to stick them on the wall. I used Faber-Castell Tack It Multipurpose Adhesive to stick the rolls to the wall.

Step 9: I used masking tape to mark the area on the wall where I want to place the wall clock. I create horizontal and vertical line to guide me to place the wall clock. It is an optional, you could just  use ruler and remark your wall with pencil.

Step 10: Start to place the rolls one by one and place your clock on the center.

So this is what you gonna end up with.....

A gorgeous simple wall clock made from toilet paper rolls. I am pretty happy with the result. I was not expect it will turn quite good like this. Because you know sometimes you will end up with something that totally different with what you imagine.
